Kolkata was founded by Job Charnock on 24 August, 1690. Right? Wrong. Although, this is a common belief that foundation of Kolkata is attributed to British East India Company, the idea is completely dismissed by the Kolkata High Court, thanks to the facts unleashed by Sabarna Sangrahashala Museum. The Museum which unveiled this truth in the public interest has all the documentary evidences to prove its stand accessible to common public. Located at Barisha, the Sabarna Sangrahashala Museum was established in 2003 and is the only family museum in Kolkata which is open to all visitors. It was developed by Sabarna Roy Choudhury Paribar Parishad.
Sabarna Sangrahashala is a great tourist attraction as well as a first hand source for history buffs and research scholars. Thousands of visitors have been reported to have benefited by the museum so far. Sabarna Sangrahashala is a treasure of antique manuscripts, pictures, books, tickets and coins. To cater to the needs of the students and researchers, the museum also maintains a library and a reading hall.
The gallery of the museum exhibits scores of rare artifacts, maps, documents and Kabulati patras. You will see a historical lease deed of 1698 which portrays the Right to rent three villages Sutanti, Kalikatah and Govindapuri. This historic lease deed made the basis to bust the myth that Kolkata was a British discovery.
An exclusive collection old coins and postal stamps is an all time attraction for the numismatics and philatelists. The common visitors may also see special exhibits in which historical source materials and articles of great historical importance are kept on display.
If you are a history enthusiast, your journey to Kolkata is incomplete if you miss out on Sabarna Sangrahashala. The museum is open to all for free everyday except Thursdays. So have a glimpse through the galleries that talk true saga of the city.
